Coalescer filter cartridges are designed to remove fine liquid droplets, aerosols, and entrained contaminants from gas or liquid streams by combining filtration and droplet coalescence. A coalescer filter cartridge is a filtration element designed to capture fine liquid droplets or aerosols and combine them into larger droplets that can be separated more easily from the flowing medium.
Unlike a conventional particulate filter that primarily retains solid contaminants, a coalescing element is designed around droplet capture, coalescence, drainage, and phase separation.
The actual performance of a coalescer depends on the filter media, fiber structure, flow direction, fluid properties, operating pressure, temperature, and housing design. Therefore, selecting a replacement element should not be based on the outside dimensions alone.
A coalescer cartridge normally consists of several functional components rather than a single layer of filter material.
Coalescing Media
The coalescing media is the core functional layer. Glass fiber, synthetic fiber, polyester and other media can be selected according to the fluid, separation requirement and operating conditions.
Support Layer
A support structure helps maintain the shape of the filter media and reduce deformation under operating pressure.
Inner or Outer Protective Layer
Depending on the design, a protective layer may help improve mechanical strength and protect the functional media during installation and operation.
End Caps
The end-cap configuration determines how the cartridge interfaces with the filter housing. Flat, threaded, bolted, handle-type and other configurations may be available depending on the required replacement design.
Sealing Components
Gaskets and seals must be selected according to the fluid, temperature and chemical compatibility requirements. Common sealing materials may include NBR, FKM, EPDM or other application-specific materials.
