Coalescing filters are industrial equipment used to perform coalescing in the oil and gas processing and petrochemical industries. Coalescence is the process that causes liquid aerosols to aggregate (clump together) to form larger droplets that are large enough to be expelled by gravity.
The coalescing filter can be used alone or as a component of a larger separation unit. Choosing the right type of equipment will depend on the nature of the substance to be separated. For example, an oil coalescer or fuel coalescer can be used to recover oil or fuel from a water-oil mixture, respectively, while a gas coalescer is used to separate gases from a gas-fuel or gas-water emulsion.

Coalescing filter consists of multiple baffle walls or screens located at different points inside the device. The mixture to be separated is then applied to the filter. The baffle of the separation device shields the component by trapping it in different parts.
The screening mechanism works using the molecular weight and density of individual components. For example, in a water-oil separation (liquid-liquid coalescence), a baffle inside the coalescer separates heavier oil molecules in one direction to the discharge point. At the same time, water vapor molecules diffuse through the filter element to the agglomeration, which is then discharged to the system by gravity.
